John Stewart was born in 1983. Stewart served in the United States Marine Corps and then became an architect. In 2007, he was selected to become the third Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. The following year, Stewart joined the Justice League in August 2008. He was assigned the designation 14. At some point in Team Year Zero, his sister Lynn Stewart married Jefferson Pierce.

On the evening of July 4th Team Year Zero, Stewart volunteered to help escort Blockbuster to the proper authorities along with Hawkwoman, Hawkman, Hal Jordan, and Captain Atom. On September 23rd, Stewart helped repair damage done to the Cave by Red Inferno and Red Torpedo. On October 1st, 18:13 EDT, Stewart fought Plant Creatures in Metropolis with Superman, Hawkman, and Hawkwoman. On December 30th, Green Lantern was one of six Leaguers sent to rampage through Rimbor while under the control of Starro-tech. In Team Year Three, Stewart helped relocate the Genomorphs from Project Cadmus in Washington D.C. to a location somewhere in the Central time zone that was named Geranium City. He formed an ark construct to hold them all in for the flight. On February 17th, Team Year Five, Stewart was dispatched to Athens to help stablize the area around the Museum of Natural History. After Alpha Squad defeated Sportsmaster, they met up with Stewart. He generated a protective shield and helped escort trapped hostages outside while Alpha fought off Sportsmaster's henchmen and League of Shadows ninja.

On January 3rd, Team Year Six, Stewart confirmed two contacts were in fact aliens, Lobo and a Krolotean. He briefly informed those present about the two. When he learned of Rann's planetary alert, Stewart moved to inform Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner who were on Oa at the time. Stewart was perplexed by Miss Martian's intelligence about the Rimbor incident and consulted with the Guardians of the Universe and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps on Oa. On January 26th, Stewart formed an interstellar jet and transported a part of the Justice League to Rimbor. On June 20th, the League was exonerated and released. Stewart attended Wally West's funeral. On July 4th, the three Lanterns took the Reach to Oa to stand trial.

On July 16th, 00:16 UTC, Team Year Eight, Stewart was one of many members of the Justice League present on Rann helping fight off an Apokoliptian invasion force. They were all horrified the combatant that died fighting Black Lightning was a 14 year old female meta-human trafficked from Earth. On January 25th, 22:25 UTC, Team Year Nine, the three Green Lanterns encapsulated the Orphanage in a construct to prevent it from escaping through a Boom Tube again. However, Granny Goodness turned her machine on and enthralled the League to the Anti-Life Equation. On January 26th, after 01:17 UTC, the enthralled Stewart was present at the machine when the Team tried to rescue Halo and were enthralled, too. At 02:48 UTC, the three Lanterns were already on the floor due to being normal humans under the sway of Anti-Life. Everyone was liberated by Halo after she was freed by Victor Stone.

They promptly destroyed the machine. The three Lanterns formed a construct to contain the explosion. After Granny Goodness fled the ship, the Lanterns gathered Lashina, Gilotina, and Mantis in bubble constructs. On February 24th, 19:00 EST, Stewart remotely attended the meeting of the League, Team, Outsiders, and Batman and Nightwing's covert teams on the Watchtower from the Javelin. He voted for Black Lightning to be the next leader of the League.
