The Mother Box is a living computer connected to the Source. About the size of a brick, the Mother Box was long ago created by the New God, Himon who used Element X. And after that, only very talented New Gods are able to create more of them. Element X serves as a sort of medium to the Source and draws on its energy. Thus, it is the link between God and His creations. Despite their divine origins, most New Gods regard them mostly as a tool to get from one place to another via Boom Tube.

When Superman first met Orion, he had his Mother Box recite the origins of the New Gods. In battle at the Sinnott Air Force Base, Orion also used it to redirect enemy fire back at the Hovertanks attacking him. During the many conflicts between the New Gods of Apokolips and Earth, one Mother Box was confiscated and kept locked away in a vault at the Metropolis S.T.A.R. Labs. Superman later used it without permission to go to Apokolips and defeat Darkseid once and for all. Over the years, Superman notably destroyed two Mother Boxes: those of Darkseid's and Mantis'. Mister Miracle was able to use his Mother Box to trace the Boom Tubes used by Granny Goodness and Big Barda to boom to the JLU Metrotower and reverse their polarities, sucking them and their forces back through their tubes to Apokolips.

50 years later, Big Barda still possesses her Mother Box. Aquagirl used it and her telepathy to form a Boom Tube that would take Starro and its clones back to its home planet. In a hypertimeline, Chronos armed Neo Gotham's Jokerz with future technology and led them in a definitive battle against the Justice League Unlimited. Among the surviving members, Batman now used the Mother Box, suggesting even Barda was slain in battle. It was destroyed by Chucko in battle when the first Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern appeared from the past. Since Batman and Lantern reset the timeline, this event ceased to be and the Mother Box returned to Big Barda.
