A supreme intelligence that controls hordes of parasitic life forms that go from planet to planet conquering races and feeding off their psychic energies. Coming from the depths of space, the Imperium and its forces have no natural adaptation to ultraviolet light and die if exposed indefinitely.

1000 years ago, the Imperium invaded Martian society at the height of its technological splendor. The two races warred for centuries until a last ditch effort was made and a small team infiltrated the Imperium's citadel including J'onn Jonzz. The team utilized a powerful nerve gas to render the horde immobile. The lone survivor, J'onn sealed the citadel and stood watch for 500 years at which he into hibernation-like status. An American astronaut from Earth managed to open the seal and awaken the horde by accident. For years, the Imperium's horde sent advance agents to Earth to disable its defenses. The combined forces of Batman, Superman, Flash, J'onn Jonzz, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl were able to stave off the invasion forces and killed the Imperium in the process.

The foot soldiers of the Imperium, the Invaders are sentient and serve the specific purpose of acting for the Imperium and conquering planets. The Invaders then feed off of their victims psychic energy, which is then transferred to the Imperium. When the Invaders fed off of the Martians, the Invaders inherited the Martian ability to shape shift. Like the Imperium, the Invaders' weakness are exposure to light
