The Friday morning after cutting ties with the Joker once and for all, Harley Quinn woke up in Poison Ivy's hothouse hideout and was startled by a man hiding in some foliage. Ivy introduced him as her henchman Doug. Harley ordered him to keep his eyes above the neckline then asked why he was with them. Ivy insisted he was part of her plans. Instead of agreeing to go out on a romp, Ivy revealed her plan to protect the Fatshedera Lizei vine from Wayne Enterprises' development of the banks of the Newton River for a hotel complex. She needed money to buy more equipment and hire more operatives. Harley thought her idea to rob a bank would only bring trouble her way. Doug agreed and suggested targeting people who wouldn't go to the police like Penguin or Black Mask. Harley recalled Catwoman was out of town. Harley successfully stole some of Catwoman's jewels and returned. Rather than celebrating right away, Ivy told Harley to immediately fence the stolen jewels. She took Doug along and nicknamed him "Shrub."

They pawned the jewelry at Carlini's Pawn and narrowly avoided detection by Batman and Nightwing as they drove past in the Batmobile. Harley gave Ivy's cut to Doug and was about to ponder how to spend it when he suggested poker. Doug took Harley with him to play poker at the back of the Iceberg Lounge to spend their cuts. Murphy didn't appreciate him bringing Harley. Doug assured him she was cool. Murphy advised her to behave and Doug was responsible for her. The others recognized Harley as Joker's doll but she corrected them she wasn't anymore and added she kicked him so hard in the crotch he was still sitting down to pee a week later. Rhino congratulated her and asked who she was henching for. Doug answered Poison Ivy for her. Harley became upset they thought she was Ivy's henchman. Someone noted they all thought she was the queen of the henchmen. She only got angrier. Doug told her to calm down. Harley kicked the table and proclaimed she was "Harley Freaking Quinn." A fight broke out and Doug was blamed.

The next night, Doug made his way back to his apartment bruised and wondered how it could get any worse. Batman and Nightwing were waiting for him. Batman noticed his left eye was swollen shut. Doug lied and said he walked into a door. Nightwing pointed out everyone talked and no one tried to protect him. He asked about Harley. Doug jumped out a window and ran off, unaware Batman slipped a tracer on him. Meanwhile, Harley realized she was in the passenger seat of every relationship she got into. Ivy insisted she was the only one of them she cared about. Harley was troubled Ivy didn't identify as a human, too, and ran off. She bumped into Doug, who was sure he lost Batman and Nightwing on Novick Street. They were perched atop a gargoyle and noted he stopped half a mile away. Harley got their attention and led them right to Ivy so she could get the help she needed. Ivy got away. From a distance, Doug realized he was unemployed.

Over a year later, Harley Quinn believed the key to finding Poison Ivy was through "Shrubby" and she deduced he was at the dive bar. She directed Batman to take the Donnenfeld Expressway to Bludhaven. Batman looked at Nightwing, who shrugged. Batman turned right and took the Expressway. They eventually arrived at the bar. Harley assured them it looked like and was a total dump but claimed all the cool hench-people hung out there. Min and Max were on the stage singing "Don't Pull Your Love" when Harley sighted Doug on the dance floor. She swung her butt and knocked the Ice Maiden away from Doug and made small talk. Harley walked to Batman and Nightwing and informed them she had to do something for Doug or there was no deal. Harley took the stage and sang Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone." Once Harley was finished, Doug wrote the location of Ivy's hideout on a matchbook. She thanked him and kissed him on the cheek.

Five days later, Nightwing took Alfred Pennyworth with him to the bar to blow off a bit of steam. When they entered, Two-Face was singing. Nightwing tried to ask Doug where Harley was but he had no reason to play nice. Catwoman's henchmen recognized him. A fight broke out.
